Site cuts in Sunbury
A Melton crew for the cut, the spoil and the trenches. Levels to the plan, scope on the quote.
Cut the high side, compact the low side
A flat estate scrape and a Sunbury slope are different jobs. On a block in Rosenthal, Kingsfield, or the older streets above Jacksons Creek, the machine cuts the high side and places that material on the low side, compacted in layers, until the platform is at design level. Balancing volumes on site saves truck movements.
The fill side is the part that matters. Every layer has to meet the geotechnical engineer’s specification and, on larger fills, density testing. Fill that is only pushed into place settles, and a slab that sits half on natural ground and half on soft fill is how cracks start.
After the platform, the exposed face is either a batter or a retaining wall. Batters use more yard; a wall that holds more than about a metre often needs its own engineering. The Sunbury and Diggers Rest guide walks through that choice. Rock appears in this corridor too — the basalt cap around Diggers Rest and Bulla is called out in that guide.

Sunbury questions
Is a sloping Sunbury block just a deeper scrape?
No. It is cut-and-fill. The low side has to be compacted in layers to the engineer’s specification.
What should I ask before comparing quotes?
How the fill is compacted and checked, whether rock is allowed for, and whether the face will be a batter or a wall.
